Originally built 1955 to provide food services for the employees at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and its neighbor Hanscom Air Force base. The cafeteria has undergone several renovations and additions over its 60+ year lifetime to accommodate the growing number of employees and service demands of the laboratory. The most recent redesign of the cafeteria was driven by the desire to alleviate congestion, enlarge and create more functional food service stations, and create a welcoming environment with the goal of increasing access and efficiency for the cafeteria patrons. To achieve the design goals, The servery was expanded by nearly 50%. The seating displace by the servery size has been accommodated in a bright clerestoried addition. While the cafeteria seating has been centralized, the space has been designed creating three distinct seating zones with three different ambiences in order to minimize any sense of a sea of tables and chairs. In net the seating count has been slightly increased. A row of booths separate the main hallway from the seating and creates a space for dining with associates, while at the same time providing opportunities for collaboration during non-peak times. The center dining section provides a visually quiet space for dining while the north seating area, located in the new addition, is an expansive brightly lit place to sit and enjoy lunch. At one end of the new addition a "news bar" has been included with high top tables to create even another dining experience.
