Beth Israel Congregation has served Waterville, Maine’s Jewish community since 1902 and has contributed to a wider community’s cultural vibrancy for just as long. The project’s main objectives included: 1) refurbishing the historical building, including the main sanctuary, classrooms, and social hall, 2) provide significant security measures for the entire structure, 3) create a Mikvah a religious bath only the second in the entire State of Maine.

The Mikvah experience serves to move one from one phase in life to the next: It is a place of communal support and connection through engagement of the users and professional practitioners. It is a place for self-reflection, gentle stillness, appreciating the sensations of delight and well-being. This is a celebration of the power of water in purification and rejuvenation. Many educational programs are being developed as well as inventive ways that the Mikvah may provide support and healing during times of adversity as well as celebration.

The project was completed in 2024. The Contractor is Sheridan Construction. The Owner’s Representative is Paul Ureneck of Colby College.
