Perched atop a sloping hill on the shore of Mystic Lake in Arlington, Massachusetts, this home is nestled into the hillside and surrounded by beautiful plantings. The owners wished to expand their existing sun-room and deck to maximize views of the lake and take advantage of natural light. This addition responds to many of the existing home’s contemporary details; Clean lines and sleek surfaces contribute to the interior, while a minimal cable rail system complements the exterior. A storefront glazing system was chosen for the large window wall. In order to reduce glare, while still providing a large area of glass, the design team incorporated a louvered sun shade into the design, further enhancing the contemporary feel of the home. To increase privacy, an additional system of electronic recessed screens were hidden in the soffit above the curtain wall. By cladding the addition with the same shakes and white wood trim as the existing home, the new volume reads as an extension of the home rather than a departure from it. Under the shade of the new sun-room, the patio was updated to allow for a partially recessed hot tub with an ipe decking surround to match the soaring deck above.
