BEATY RESIDENCE
Hague, NY
Situated on the west shore of beautiful Lake George in rural upstate New York, the owners wished to replace an existing seasonal camp cottage with an up-to-date home for their retirement. The site is located in a picturesque cove formed by the Waltonian Islands chain at the northern side of the town of Hague, New York. The design of the cottage was driven, in part, by local zoning regulations which allowed for a very modest increase in both the existing cottage footprint and gross square footage. While the footprint is of a modest size (1085 SQ FT) the open plan of the first floor creates a sense of expansive space with the kitchen, dining area, and family great room open to a screen porch, oriented towards the cove. The axial orientation of the three rooms maximizes the long views of open water facing south toward the southern end of Lake George. Stylistically, the cottage references the Adirondack Camp vernacular and incorporated cascading low sloped gable roof forms with extended eaves and bracketed window overhangs. Local stone was used to clad the foundation and to visually anchor the house to the stone ledge exposed on the bluff and bordering the lake edge.
