Stop & Shop, located on Bedford Street in Lexington, is a dramatic departure from usual supermarket design. To create an exterior that would blend with the surrounding architecture in the heart of the historic district, Stop & Shop called upon BFE because of their extensive work with Historic District Commission. Through the use of brick and stone, the exterior elevation evokes a sense of marketplace vernacular, which is carried throughout the building. Over the check out and front aisle, a light monitor was added, providing natural light to filter in from above. The interior was expanded and transformed to include a new array of merchandise, a full service floral shop, a bakery, fish and delicatessen counters, along with a snack and salad bar.
